Laser Cutting Cost in Perth: What Affects the Price
There is no single price per part for laser cutting, because every job uses a different amount of material and machine time. This guide explains what drives the cost of a laser cutting job, so you can read a quote with confidence and design parts that cost less to make. For an exact price, send us your files and we will quote the job.
The six things that set the price
| Cost driver | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Material and grade | Stainless steel and aluminium cost more per kilo than mild steel, and some grades cost more than others. |
| Thickness | Thicker plate cuts more slowly, so each metre of cut takes more machine time. It also uses more material by weight. |
| Total cut length | The laser charges by time, and time follows the length of every outline and hole added together. |
| Number of holes (pierces) | Every hole or cut-out starts with a pierce. Parts with many small holes take longer than their size suggests. |
| Quantity | Set-up and programming are spread across the whole run, so the price per part usually drops as quantity rises. |
| Extra processes | Folding, welding, tapping, machining and finishing each add labour after cutting. |
How material use is worked out
Parts are nested on a standard sheet to use as much of it as possible. Small parts that nest tightly waste little material, while large or awkward shapes can leave offcuts that still have to be paid for. Our fibre laser handles sheets up to 2500 x 6000mm, so large parts and big batches can often be cut from one sheet.
Seven ways to lower your laser cutting quote
- Use a standard material and thickness where the design allows.
- Send clean DXF files at true 1:1 scale in millimetres, so no time is spent redrawing. See our guide to preparing DXF files.
- Remove detail that does not do a job, such as decorative holes or very fine text.
- Group parts of the same material and thickness into one order.
- Order the quantity you will actually use over the next few months rather than many small repeat orders.
- Ask whether a feature can be laser cut instead of drilled or machined afterwards.
- Have parts cut, folded and welded by one workshop to save handling and freight between suppliers.
Every job is priced on its own drawings. The fastest way to know the cost is to send your files with material, thickness and quantity for each part.
